STAR Quiz Where are you in your leadership right now? Leading people is rarely what you pictured when you signed up for it. Some of us are new to a role and wondering if we’re doing it right. Some of us have been at it for years and wondering what’s next, or whether this is all there is. This short quiz helps you name where you are and determine if there’s a next step. It takes about three minutes. There are seven questions, and there are no right answers. Pick the one closest to your real experience, not the one you feel you’re supposed to select. At the end, you’ll get a short reflection and one question to carry with you. The people who come to this course and benefit from it generally relate to one of two situations. Select the one that best fits yours.(Required) I am new to a leadership role, or am pursuing one, and I’m worried the role could require more from me than expected. I have been leading or influencing others for a while, and I am wondering what comes next, or whether this is all there is. For each question, choose the one answer closest to your actual experience, or to what you expect it to be.When something important lands on your team, what is your first move?(Required) I pick it up myself. It is faster, and I know it will be done right. I hand it off, then spend the week wondering whether it will turn out all right. I ask who is best placed to take it and what they need from me. What is hardest about the role right now?(Required) Not being sure I can do this well. Having difficult conversations without damaging relationships. Letting go of the work I am best at. What makes a week feel like a good one?(Required) Nothing goes wrong. Beyond that, I have no real way to tell how I did. I get a lot done myself. My team moves something forward, even without my direct involvement. Where do you turn when you are unsure what to do?(Required) A mentor, a peer, or a manager I can talk to openly. Mostly nowhere. I make the call myself. I work harder until it sorts itself out. When someone who reports to you falls short of expectations, what do you do?(Required) I am not sure how to handle it, and I have no one to talk it through with. I talk with them about it, even though those conversations are uncomfortable. I fix it myself instead of raising it with them. What would you most like to be different six months from now?(Required) I spend less of my time in the details. I feel more confident in my own judgment. My team works well, and I have a way to keep getting better at leading it. When you picture the next few years in your current role, what do you feel?(Required) Frustration, because the next step is not there for me. A pull to try something different. Mostly contentment, with a nagging question. Which best describes your options at work right now?(Required) I could keep going as I am and be fine. There are options, but I have not explored them. There is no obvious next role, or I was passed over. When the feeling that there should be more shows up, what do you do with it?(Required) I start looking around at roles, courses, or side projects. I remind myself of what I have and try to let it go. I stew on it, especially when someone else moves up. What would make where you are right now feel more satisfying?(Required) Recognition, or a clearer route to advancement. More time and energy for things outside of work. Something new to learn or build. Who have you talked to about this?(Required) A few people, and I am collecting ideas. People close to me, who think I should be happy with what I have. Hardly anyone. It feels awkward to raise. If nothing changed over the next year, how would you feel?(Required) Resentful. Disappointed in myself for not trying. Fine, as long as I chose it deliberately. Δ
